"Music for Ears & Bodies" - Lauren Sarah Hayes Workshop

Open to all women, female-identifying, non-binary and gender non-conforming people. Attendance is by ticket only, with limited places available.

Description: Explore using bespoke technology for experiencing sound as haptic feedback. Can physically feeling your music offer insight into something about the music or compositional process itself? Does it offer new potential strategies for building digital musical instruments? In this workshop, I will give a brief outline of how and why I have used haptic technology in my own musical practice and then guide participants through various ways to map sound to sensation through DIY technologies. Participants are encouraged to bring their own tracks, performance setups, or synths to plug into the system and experience sound through their bodies as well as their ears!

Bio: Lauren Sarah Hayes is a musician and sound artist who builds and performs with hybrid analog/digital instruments. Lauren is a "positively ferocious improvisor" (Cycling '74), her music refusing to sit nicely between free improv, experimental pop, techno, and noise. Over the last decade she has developed and honed a deliberately challenging and unpredictable performance system that explores the relationships between bodies, sound, environments, and technology. The Wire described her most recent album MANIPULATION (pan y rosas discos) as “skittering melodies and clip-clopping rhythms suggesting a mischievous intelligence emerging from this web of wires.”

She has developed several haptic (touch-based) interfaces and composes music that can be experienced physically as vibration throughout the body. She also enjoys creating site-responsive performances in unusual locations, recently playing four sold-out shows in Hamilton Mausoleum (famous for having one of the longest echoes of any manmade structure) as part of Sonica Festival. She recently performed at Moogfest and gave workshops and lectures at Ableton’s LOOP festival. She is currently Assistant Professor of Sound Studies within the School of Arts, Media and Engineering at Arizona State University and is a member of the New BBC Radiophonic Workshop.
