Get WIRED online this summer
Yorkshire Sound Women Network's popular WIRED music technology club for girls is back in online form this summer. We’re offering three free short courses to give ages 11-16 an inspiring and hands-on introduction to sound recording, editing using Audacity, and sound design.
Delivered online and led by professional musicians and audio experts, the courses are tailored to be accessible at home, with projects to try out on a computer, tablet or smartphone.
The sessions are open to all girls, young women and people of marginalised genders aged 11-16 years old living in Yorkshire. No prior experience with technology or musical instruments is necessary and any software used is free to download. To take part, download and complete an application form from the YSWN website and return it to info@yorkshiresoundwomen.com.
Each of the courses runs for three weeks:
1. Introduction to sound recording
with Caro C and Sophie Cooper
Thursdays 25 June, 2 July and 9 July, 6pm–7.15pm
These three fun sessions will explore sound recording. Playing with the sounds around us including household objects, the voice, your musical instrument and nature, you’ll learn how to capture the best sounds and get creative with the sounds you’ve chosen. During these sessions you’ll be mastering useful skills that can help all kinds of careers in music including being a sound engineer, performer or writing music for film.
2. Editing using Audacity
with Emily Johnson and Liina Turtonen
Wednesdays 15 July, 22 July and 29 July, 6pm–7.15pm
Learn how to generate ideas, develop a song, and edit samples in the free audio software Audacity. You will learn all the tools you need to make songs by yourself at home and have lots of fun along the way!
3. Introduction to Sound Design
with Aiwan Obinyan and Angel Lee
Wednesdays 5 August, 12 August and 19 August, 6pm – 7.15pm
Sound design is at the very heart of a film, theatre or TV show. This short course will immerse you in the world of sound design, giving an introduction to both the technical and creative skills required to enhance the drama on stage and on screen.
Please note: Participants registering for the sound design course should complete either the sound recording and/or Audacity course first.
