Join artist and printmaker Danielle Creenaune for a masterclass in plywood lithography, (Mokulito), a process which combines the principles of lithography and woodblock printing (Mokuhanga), using wood as a printing matrix, instead of limestone. This technique was developed by professor Seishi Ozaku in Japan in the 1970’s. Josef Budka and his daughter Ewa have realised further development of the process in Poland.

Danielle uses mokulito extensively in her own practice, and has adapted the process, combining it with elements of the traditional Japanese method, traditional lithography and also those stemming from her own discoveries. A unique characteristic of Mokulito is that it produces small editions, (usually of under 10 prints), each of which is varied. The image provides a wood texture which can also be combined with woodcut. It is a very organic process due to its variability, flexibility and the pace at which the matrix can be processed and printed. Although at first glance prints in the edition may seem the same, each possesses its own unique attributes. With large scale image making it allows for working more intuitively, where the subtleties of wood texture can be achieved and colour and composition can be explored more freely.

During the course learners will look at artwork examples to be able to identify how certain marks are achieved, and learn about how to prepare, draw onto, process and print their own test blocks. This process uses the etching press to print, so attendees on the course can continue to use WYPW’s facilities as a member afterwards to continue working.

This course runs alongside Danielle’s solo exhibition in the WYPW gallery space during April/May 2018.
