Celebrating Black British Artists
This is a friendly and welcoming, online discussion session.
Through case studies of Sonia Boyce, Frank Bowling, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and Yinka Shonibare, we will explore how and why black British artists since the mid-twentieth century have both explored and not explored, issues of identity (including race and gender) in their work, against a backdrop of 'European art history' dominated by white men.
As well as analysing selected works formally, we will touch on debates around representation, post colonialism and the politics of exhibition.
Students will also be invited to highlight further black, British artists who are inspirational to them individually.
