Accumulate
The new St Albans Museum + Gallery opens June 8 following the transformation of St Albans’ Town Hall. UH Arts is delighted to be a partner in this pioneering project, contributing a range of exhibitions and events. The doors open to museum collection displays and temporary exhibitions, including a surprising intervention through the building by artist Lyndall Phelps, a dramatic new installation by Susie MacMurray and a showcase of work by the three artists-in-residence entitled 'Accumulate'.
Accumulate unites the work of resident artists Katy Gillam-Hull, Lyndall Phelps and Abi Spendlove, who have independently researched and journeyed with St Albans Museums’ collections over the past three years.
The artists
Katy Gillam-Hull
Katy’s delicate objects reference the remarkable Salaman tool collection, one of the most significant in the UK. Exploring the aesthetic and functional qualities of the tools, she creates small-scale copper and wire pieces that invite us to reconsider these perhaps overlooked museum artefacts.
Lyndall Phelps
Lyndall too invites conversations between selected collection objects and her own exquisite handmade artworks. She examines St Albans’ industrial past, from Ballito’s ladies’ stockings, Ryder & Sons packet seeds to H. Rose & Sons’ handmade brushes. Research then led into the origins of the museums’ collections; the first collectors, acquisitions and absent objects.
Abi Spendlove
Abi has been inspired by fragments of stained glass found in the museums’ collections and has created a range of reflective, highly-coloured pieces. She re-sizes selected shards to large proportions, using scale and transparent materials to celebrate their historic significance, detail and craftsmanship.
