#TorbayTattooTales
What's the story behind your ink?
Torre Abbey Museum launches #TorbayTattooTales as part of of the Tattoo: British Tattoo Art Revealed Exhibition
Torbay Tattoo Tales aims to be the world’s largest digital collection of Tattoo’s and associated stories captured over a three month period in South Devon. Tattoos can reveal personal stories, represent shared history and identity, as well as showcase artistry—or sometimes they just are what they are!
The team at Torre Abbey Museum is working with local tattoo studios and members of the body art community to collect photographs of tattoos and the stories behind them. This will help build up a social history of this art form in the area. With such a rich maritime, fishing and naval heritage in the area, this should also prove a fascinating insight into both the local history and ongoing passion for ink art. The archive will form a snap shot of the tattoos in the area in early 2018, with the project blog providing visiting and invited academics with material for further research.
To start the project, we have collected some #TorbayTattooTales, which we hope will give you a taste of what you will find when you explore the growing archive online or as part of this amazing exhibition. Visitors to the exhibition and online are invited to photograph their significant Tattoo and tell us the story/tale behind it.

There are a couple of ways to share your tattoo story:
On Instagram or Twitter – simply include the hashtag #TorbayTattooTales in a post with your tattoo photo and story. Secondly why not come along to see the exhibition where one of our Torbay Tattoo Tales team will photograph your tattoo and capture your tale to add to the archive.
We can't wait to hear the story behind your tattoo...
