JACKI HILL-MURPHY: KATE MARSDEN IN SIBERIA, AN ONGOING JOURNEY

JACKI HILL-MURPHY: KATE MARSDEN IN SIBERIA, AN ONGOING JOURNEY

Saturday 28th October, 2pm

(please note that this talk has been rescheduled and was previously advertised as Thursday 26th October, 7pm)

As part of Torquay Museum's Explorer Season, a talk and book signing by Jacki Hill-Murphy.

'Kate Marsden in Siberia - an Ongoing Journey'

In 1892 Kate Marsden travelled across Siberia by sledge and horseback in winter, a journey deemed to be one of the hardest journey ever undertaken by a woman. Although she built the first leper colony in Siberia her detractors persecuted her through the press and she died a broken woman. Jacki replicated her journey by public transport, wrote her biography and is now involved in humanitarian work in eastern Siberia.

Jacki Hill-Murphy has travelled to some of the most inhospitable places on earth to re-create the journeys of daring women adventurers from the past. In tracking valiant women who left inhibition at home and journeyed into the unknown, she pays tribute to their invincible spirits and achievements. She has followed in the footsteps of Victorian explorers Isabella Bird who travelled by yak across the Digar-La in Ladakh, India; Mary Kingsley, who pioneered the route to the 13,255 ft summit of Mount Cameroon; and Kate Marsden who trudged from Moscow to Siberia in search of a cure for leprosy. Jacki also braved piranha-infested waters in a dugout canoe to replicate the 1769 expedition of Isabel Godin, the only survivor of a 42-person, 4,200-mile expedition along the Amazon River. Jacki says: “We are all adventuresses who need to travel to be who we are and we are better people for it.”

Jacki will be signing copies of her recently published book: 'The Extraordinary Tale of Kate Marsden, any my journey across Siberia in her footsteps'

This is a fundraising event for Torquay Museum. Tickets cost £5 and are available from reception at Torquay Museum either in person or over the phone. Pre-booking is advisable - call 01803 293975.
