'Sharing Stories' a Festival celebrating Storytelling and Writing on the English Riviera

To celebrate 'World Book Day', Torbay Museums (Brixham Heritage Museum, Torre Abbey Museum and Torquay Museum) will be hosting a weekend of events, tours, talks and presentations with the theme of 'Sharing Stories'

At Torquay Museum

Retrospective Poetry at the Museum will be an evening of fun-filled and various spoken word inspired by the collections at Torquay Museum. Local poets Ken Beevers, Jason Disley, Melanie Crump, Becky Nuttall and Robert Garnham will provide an hour of entertaining and whimsical poetry, performing entirely new pieces inspired by the wonderful collection at Torquay Museum.

Ken Beevers

Ken Beevers is a former librarian. He retired to Torbay in 2011, and went to a creative writing class run by South Devon College, and discovered poetry. He also joined the Torquay Museum Society. Robert Garnham

Robert has appeared at festivals such as Womad and London gay pride, and his one hour show Static recently featured at festivals in Bath, Guildford and the Edinburgh Fringe, where he has performed for the last three years.
His first collection was published in 2016 by Burning Eye Books, and he was long listed for the Saboteur Awards in the category Spoken Word Artist of the Year. He is currently working with the musical jazz improvisation group Croydon Tourist Office, and has narrated and appeared in a short film, ‘Professor in the Bathroom’. Robert provides workshops for adults and sixth form students in comedy poetry, and has been Poet in Residence at the Artizan Gallery in Torquay, and on the LGBT radio magazine show ‘Listen Out’ in Exeter. Lately he has been appearing on adverts for the Nationwide Building Society.

Becky Nuttall

Becky draws inspiration from a childhood immersed in art; her father was writer and artist Peter Draper who in turn was close friends with Hubert (Nibs) Dalwood. Peter was also a founder member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen. Alongside this creative home life are influences from a lifelong love of Dadaism, Surrealism, Kurt Schwitters and the effect of being a Protestant girl from an unconventional background in a convent school.

Jason Disley

Jason Disley, is an Author and Poet from Salford . He has lived here in Torquay for over 20 years. His first collection - The New Beat Generation - was published in 1996. He has written several Beat, ands music inspired poetry books. His latest collection - Songs of Benevolence & Rage - has just recently been released this year. He has also had his debut novel published - Seven Day Fool – in late 2017. It is thriller set in Manchester during the sixties. He is also a regular at Stanza Extravaganza.

Melanie Crump

Melanie Crump is a Torquay based poet whose work looks at life in all its rich variety, drawing inspiration from real lives and loves and what it means to be human. Her work is humorous, yet with an undercurrent of seriousness.

All events are FREE to attend, but a valid Museum entry ticket for Torquay Museum/Torre Abbey Museum events is required*. Pay once and get in free for a year.
