JOHN RISDON - 'THE MARINERS WAY' AN EXPLORER SEASON TALK
Saturday 2nd December, 11am.
As part of Torquay Museum's Explorer Season, John Risdon will give a fascinating and entertaining account of “The Mariners Way 2008 – Bideford to Dartmouth”.
Born and bred, a man of Devon whose life throughout has been entwined in experiencing and learning as much as possible about the beautiful county and its communities, as he arrived into more mature years he felt driven to make allegiance to the land that had given him so much fulfilment. From past studies he had learnt of those mariners of the past who from Tudor times had often, when paying off ship at Bideford, walked cross-county to Dartmouth, there to take further employment at sea. To walk in the footsteps of those men but now 400 years on, seemed a perfect way to see his county, through the soles of his boots and do his utmost to compare their Devon with his in 2008. It was to be a journey that surpassed his greatest expectations. This illustrated talk is that journey.
This is a fundraising event for Torquay Museum. Tickets cost £5 and are available from reception at Torquay Museum either in person or over the phone. Pre-booking is advisable - call 01803 293975.
