Torbay Film Club presents Hirsohima Mon Amour
Hiroshima Mon Amour is a simple tale of a French woman and a Japanese man who are wrapping up an adulterous affair they conducted while she was in Japan acting in an antiwar film. As they discuss their impending separation, the conversation incorporates their respective memories of war: He was present at the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, while she had an ill-fated affair with a German soldier as a teen in provincial France. The story is mostly a meditation on memory, loss and time as they relate to love and war.
War films can lose some of their ability to startle and amaze. In the same way, the inclusion of graphic post-bombing newsreel footage from Hiroshima in a movie released only 14 years after the fact must have had more of an impact at the time. ("Hiroshima, Mon Amour" was disqualified from competition at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival out of fear that its anti-nuke stance would alienate America.)
This won a BAFTA and a Bambi Award. These are given to recognise excellence in international media and television "with vision and creativity who affected and inspired the German public that year," both domestic and foreign. First held in 1948, they are the oldest media awards in Germany.
The film starts at 7.30pm.
