Il Divo
Given the national news recently, Il Divo is a spectacular film about corruption in high places, specifically as that relates to the political life of Giulio Andreotti, prime minister of Italy and a senator. This is a cinematic portrait of seven-time prime minister, whose controversial legacy peaked when he was tried for Mafia ties and subsequently acquitted. A leader with close ties to the Vatican, Andreotti was also tried and acquitted for the murder of an Italian journalist, and remains a senator for life.Who would have thought that a film about a seemingly unprepossessing little Italian politician could be so entertaining.
The movie revolves around how extraordinary this man was. However, the mystery - did he or didn't he arrange all those assassinations, was he or wasn't he involved with the Mafia - was the main driver for the story. As a piece of film making, this movie is dark, elegant and strange, as befits the subject matter. The acting performances are excellent.
