Following their highly successful production of Pinter's “The Birthday Party” in November, The Playgoers of Dartington Hall are returning to Studio 1 at 'Space ' with their summer production: “The Seagull”, Anton Checkov's 'comedy of delusion' about art, fame and frustrated desires. This is an opportunity to see one of the great plays of world theatre, and one that's particularly appropriate to Dartington because of the family connection through Michael Checkov, who taught here for many years. The story grows from the relationships of a group of people around the charming, charismatic actress Irina Arkadina on a run-down country estate. By turns funny and moving, it still feels strikingly modern because of the richness of its sub-text, its powerful characterisation, and its themes of celebrity and lost dreams.
