Two Worlds Collide: Jazz meets Classical

When: Tuesday 4th April, 2017, 6pm

Two worlds collide, as two young talents from the fields of classical music and jazz come together for an intriguing concert.
Katharina Naomi Paul is a violinist based in Berlin and is keen to push the boundaries of classical music. She plays in a number of exciting ensembles including the Geneva Camerata, ’Spira Mirabilis’ (‘one of today’s top orchestras’ - Tom Service, The Guardian) and Orchestra Mozart. Chamber music is her passion, but she has won prizes as a soloist in the past, including first prize in "Jugend Musiziert”, the German equivalent of BBC Young Musician of the Year.
Adam Dyer is a jazz pianist based in London (his parents live in Dartmouth). He grew up playing classical music but was interested in improvisation from the very start. He studied jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and he has since gone on to play with various big names in the world of jazz, including Gregory Porter, Dan Berglund and Bobby Wellins. He has performed on Irish TV, BBC Radio 3, and at various international jazz festivals.
Adam and Katharina present a concert including classical music influenced by jazz: Ravel’s gorgeous Violin Sonata no.2 as well as arrangements from the Great American Songbook by Adam himself. And as a contrast, the Violin Sonata in E minor by Mozart and a piece by Stravinsky modelled on the music of the Baroque, but incorporating a touch of 20th century harmony and colour: his Suite Italienne.
