Crafted: Ceramics & the Sea-6 Day Course

This week will afford the opportunity to immerse yourself in your creative process through being inspired by the sea and all things associated with it. We will be exploring and harvesting the materials found at the sea: clay, sand, seaweed, some foraged plants and found objects. Through our exploration we will return to our roots and use the materials at hand indigenous to this area of Devon. The aim of this week is not to come away with too many objects but instead to come away with inspiration, immersion, and knowledge of the raw materials we can use to create works of art. It also includes supper on the beach, lectures, and making and glazing with Richenda MacGregor and Michael Martin at Schumacher College, the coast and Ashprington Potting Shed Studios.

During the week you will learn:
How to make glazes using raw materials, shells, seaweed, wood and plant ash
How to fire using a low-impact wood-firing kiln
How to throw clay
How to incorporate sand and other materials into a clay body
How to cast found or made objects
How to use your sketchbook effectively and incorporating it into your daily life
How to see things in a different way, understanding and knowing which local materials can be used
General geology and chemistry of the found objects

Richenda MacGregor
Richenda is an artist working in the field of Art and Ecology. She originally trained as a production potter and glassmaker and spent ten years working professionally as a maker, teacher and trainer - facilitating the transformative process of making pots and glassware, and the parallel process of supporting people to empower and transform themselves.
