Crafted: Architectural Garden Bench weekend course
£300, including all materials
Learn basic traditional woodwork by building your own stylish architectural garden bench from local wood. The bench will be a two seater with chunky legs joined with wedged tenons. You will also have the chance to use Shou-sugi-ban, the ancient Japanese technique of charring wood to preserve it.
Aims
Students should gain a good understanding of the fundamentals of bench construction, using traditional techniques and the ancient Japanese technique of charring wood to preserve it. The tutor will guide the students to construct their bench, teaching the required skills to complete a bench to take home in two days.
The course will cover:
Health and Safety
Clean and prepare timber
Using a simple fixing to attach the legs to the base
Utilising the wood with minimal wood leftovers
Surface treatment and finishing
Adding a hand hewn textured finished with a scrub plane
Making strong and aesthetically pleasing wedged tenon joints
Draw-knifing and spoke-shaving on a shave horse
