Splosh Call for Artists
Splosh Marine Arts School projects
Spring 2009
Call for artists
Following two successful School art projects in conjunction with Torbay’s Marine Arts Festival, ‘SPLOSH’ is running another year of School marine art projects thanks to funding from Aimhigher. This year the theme is ‘The sea and me’, we are working with two Schools in the Bay, delivering marine art workshops.
The objectives of the project are to:
• Encourage students to go on to Higher education
• Provide students with more information on Higher education courses especially associated with the sea
• Use visits to Berry Head, Goodrington and Living Coasts to communicate about ‘The sea and me - peoples relationship with the sea’ and inspire art workshops based on this theme
• Encourage students to consider the many different jobs associated with the sea
• Engage students with our marine environment
• Promote marine conservation
The theme for this year will be ‘The sea and me’. We are keen to see artists submitting applications which reflect this theme both in the ideas and with the materials used.
Artists working in all art forms are being invited to apply for two elements of the School projects.
1. Two days of School workshops to take place in June 2009. We will invite a whole year group (270 students) to visit one of three main sites (Seashore Centre Goodrington, Living Coasts, Torquay and Berry Head, Brixham). Following these visits, we are looking for artists to facilitate 2 full day workshops in school, based on what the students have picked up from their site visits. The artist will be accompanied by a member of staff each day from one of the above mentioned sites. Workshops will run for a full day each – a total of 2 artist days at a fee of £180 per day plus materials and expenses. We would like the project to be able to involve as many of the students as possible over the 2 day period to produce a/some large interconnected art to be displayed at both a celebration parents evening and a public sea festival later in the year.
2. A day long workshop in School with approx 20-30 students from years 8, 9 & 10 to take place in May/June 2009. We will invite a larger group (90 students) to visit one of three main sites (Seashore Centre Goodrington, Living Coasts, Torquay and Berry Head, Brixham). Following this visit, we are looking for artists to facilitate one full day workshop in school, based on what the students have picked up from their site visit. The artist will be accompanied by a member of staff each day from the visited site. Workshops will run for a full day each – a total of 1 artist day at a fee of £180 per day plus materials and expenses. We would like the art work produced to be displayed at both a celebration parents evening and a public sea festival later in the year.
For artist fees, see above. We pay expenses for materials; we are also able to contribute towards travel expenses. Please be aware that, as part of the selection process, we will discuss each project and agree a budget for materials prior to contract approval.
Please note: this project is subject to funding applications currently in progress.
