Exhibition Re-makes the Past, with ancient art and modern craft
Re-making the Past
Exhibition runs Saturday 21 March - Sunday 10 May 2015
At Devon Guild of Craftsmen, Bovey Tracey, Devon, TQ13 9AF
This exhibition brings together a group of artists who share a common fascination with bygone eras. While their objects are newly-made, inspiration is based on ancient landscapes and materials from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. The mainly sculptural work is created from natural fibres, metal, resin and ceramics with wall-based installations in enamels, glass and textiles.
Helen Marton’s oven gloves are patterned with digital prints scanned from ancient Cornish clay. Her work connects domestic rituals from the past with the present day. Overall, the artists: Mary Butcher, Susan Kinley, Helen Marton, Syann van Niftrik and Wright & Teague - have produced an exciting variation of modern-day crafted objects. Each one is a ‘re-making’ or un-earthing: of old boats and trade routes; Orkney’s monuments; decorative pottery, or Middle-Eastern Amulets.
The Guild hopes ‘Re-Making’ will provide fantastic study for students of the past as well as everyday time-travellers – with exhibits which commute between cultures past and present and explore links between objects, archaeology and history. Related events going ‘beyond the gallery’ include a free family handling session with RAMM (Royal Albert Memorial Museum); kids’ creative making days with artists; a symposium and field trip to Bronze age site, Bellever on Dartmoor.
Exhibition is free admission, Open daily 10am-5.30pm.
Co-curated by Susan Kinley, glass artist/ Devon Guild of Craftsmen Member and Saffron Wynne, Devon Guild Exhibitions Manager.
