The Festival of the Imagination at The Beehive

The Festival of the Imagination at The Beehive

The Beehive will be bursting with activity on both Friday and Saturday 27th & 28th of April for the fourth Festival of Imagination, a hands-on science and arts festival for all ages. Spring is a season when the world around us becomes awash with bright and spectacular colour, and COLOUR will be this year’s theme.

In memory of the festival founder, Dr Sue Waring, there will be a Memorial Lecture with demonstrations by Professor Peter Vukusic, who specialises in Photonics research, called “Light Fantastic: The Science of Colour” on Friday at 4.30pm. Featuring slides and demonstrations, this lecture will show how colour and light are produced in the natural world and will offer a glimpse of how the use of light and colour engineering might shape our future. The lecture will be free of charge and enjoyable for all ages over 8 years old.

During the daytime on Friday, local primary schools will be taking part in workshops, presentations and activities at The Beehive.

At 7.30pm on Friday, in the Beehive cinema, there will be a screening of ‘Loving Vincent’ – “An animated masterpiece!” Oscar nominated, this is the world’s first painted feature film and brings together 65,000 oil painted frames to reveal a stunning portrait of the life, work and untimely death of Vincent Van Gogh.

On Saturday, 28th April there will be a wide range of exhibits and a variety of activities taking place from 10.30am including puzzles and challenges, storytelling, animation and colour, experiments, Fizz Pop Science workshops, a walk-in Camera Obscura in town, and free talks for all ages, including ‘Colour in the Sky’, ‘Colour in Literature’, ‘Colour in Fine Art and how to protect it’ and ‘Astronomical Spectroscopy.’ The café will be open selling delicious cakes until 3.30pm. The day will culminate with a Fizz Pop Family Science show ‘Rainbow Bubbles’ at 3.30pm and in the evening at 7.30pm there will be a screening of ‘Star Wars – The Last Jedi’.

This year’s festival has kindly been sponsored by Mantracourt, Battishorne Trust, Mullins Trust and The Beehive.

The Festival Committee said “In memory of Sue Waring who founded the Festival of Imagination and was an excellent organiser, the Committee decided unanimously to continue and plan to carry on running the festival annually. We hope we do her enthusiasm for the festival justice and people will come along support this year’s event.”
