PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION BY ROBERT JENNISON RWA
Our latest exhibition at The Beehive features original black and white photographs taken by Robert Jennison. Robert is a seasoned exhibitor whose reputation as an outstanding painter and draftsman precedes him. A life time’s dedication to art education followed by nearly 30 years of working as a professional artist makes Jennison one of the region’s most successful and celebrated artists.
Jennison studied at the West of England College of Art, Bristol. He taught Art in secondary schools in Gloucestershire and Bristol until 1965 when he joined the staff of St Luke’s College, Exeter as Lecturer in Art Education and Art History, specialising in graphics, printmaking and photography both historical and practical.
He has exhibited paintings, prints and photographs regularly since 1961, with solo shows in London, Milan, Belfast, Bristol and Exeter. He is a member of the Royal West of England Academy and exhibits regularly with the Royal Ulster Academy in Belfast. His work is represented in public and private collections in Europe, Canada and the USA.
The practical Teacher Training sessions Jennison taught in photography were to pursue and respond to non-specific broad titles which could be interpreted as ‘pictorial reality’ or much broader concepts. He explains “The aim was to encourage a very flexible approach to the visual image, to broad thinking and response to ideas and the possible avoidance of ‘descriptive reality’ and the ‘obvious’ which would contribute a much broader approach to their own works as well as their teaching.”
The works on show at The Beehive are his own interpretation of the problems set for his students. Most of them have a broad title e.g. ‘conceptual’ and ‘reality’ and were taken during the 70’s and 80’s providing an interesting glimpse into earlier times before photography became digital and widespread and printmaking was carried out in the darkroom.
Now in his eighth decade, Robert continues to work from his East Devon studio.
The exhibition is open during our Opening Hours: Mon-Fri: 10am – 5.30pm, Sat: 10am – 12pm and 1 hour before evening performances from 1st-21st October.
