Market Showcase: Out and About in Kirklees
Out and About in Kirklees is a project by Alex Bridger and Tim Gomersall involving local lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, artists, and researchers from the University of Huddersfield. The project used an approach called psychogeography to explore Kirklees from the perspective of local LGBT people, and to understand LGBT history in the local context.
Psychogeography involves walking through the urban environment in ways that foster creativity and storytelling - for example, using a dice to decide on routes, so as to explore areas that are often abandoned or forgotten. The exhibition is made up from photographs taken on the walks, combined with snippets of discussions that were recorded while walking. The result is a set of images that are by turns funny, poignant, and puzzling
This project is part of the Temporary Contemporary Initiative - collaborating with artists and placing contemporary art in vacant spaces within Queensgate Market.
