Tolkien on Temptation, Temperament, and Theology

Tolkien on Temptation, Temperament, and Theology

Are some people inherently good, and some evil?
Are some characters simply helpless in the face of their flaws, or can they be overcome? Do our choices in the moment or a predetermined destiny dictate whether we will do well or fail in the spiritual and moral tests we face? With the help of Galadriel and Gollum, Saruman and Samwise, Frodo and Faramir, and more, we will see how The Lord of the Rings sheds light on temptation, character, and providence.

The Reverend Philip Hobday is a parish priest in Reading and is currently completing a doctorate on the theology of the sixteenth-century Church of England theologian, Richard Hooker.
