Stage Combat Weekend at Dartington Hall 17th-18th January 2015
This workshop is designed for beginners and advanced student alike with a focus on the fundamentals of stage combat. Students will work on both armed and unarmed combat techniques and develop a fight sequence over two days to be performed to an audience of guests or filmed for individual showreel material. The course is designed to develop the practical performance skills of students in the creation of convincing stage violence in a safe and effective way.
Whether you are a professional performer, a drama student or simply interested in trying your hand at some sword play then this weekend is for you. Students will learn:
Unarmed stage combat techniques (punches, kicks, slaps etc)
Basic stage sword play with a focus on broadsword and katana
Stage blood effects including how to manufacture stage blood and use it within a fight
How to choreograph a fight for stage and perform it for a live audience
We have all marvelled at the spectacular fight sequences in our favourite blockbusters or been astounded by the visceral intensity of a well executed action sequence, but very few of us ever get the chance to play the hero ourselves. A lot of the time this is due to the misinformed belief that stage combat is in some way violent or dangerous or simply something that only happens in Hollywood. Stage combat is for every performer and a basic understanding of how to fight for stage and screen is a vital part of any actors training.
Stage combat is all about safety and presentation; using safe and controlled techniques in order to create a repeatable performance that gives the illusion of violence. It is non-competitive, primarily non contact and a great way to encourage team work, trust and physical fitness for all ages.
