Radio Diploma launches
Join Soundart Radio for a life changing year of exploring the creative potential of radio as an artistic medium.
The radio industry is changing – there are more opportunities for independent producers, and more expectation that their skills will be wide ranging, encompassing scriptwriting, presenting, sound engineering and marketing. Traditional notions of radio formats are challenged by online consumption of audio, at any time and place. Nationality and language are becoming less of an issue, whereas the need for creative and original content that can hold its own increases. With the rise of community radio in the UK, radio's third sector, more people are discovering a patchwork career in radio, alternating between socially engaged creative projects and freelance production work.
This course looks at where radio comes from, where it is now and where it is headed, and prepares students for the next steps in broadcasting. Right from the start you will be producing and presenting programmes on a licensed FM radio station, with support and guidance from a wide range of industry professionals, including Nick Luscombe (presenter of Late Junction, BBC Radio 3) broadcast journalist Pippa Quelch (BBC Radio Devon) and field recordist Tony Whitehead. Students will also produce work to submit to BBC Radio Devon, and to Soundart Radio's partner stations worldwide.
Our approach to learning is multi sensory, collaborative and respectful, drawing on the traditions of Dartington College of Arts. The course will include recording sessions on Dartmoor, working with local community groups, walks, talks and cups of tea, and a weekly vocal class.
The course will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Dartington, from 10am-2pm starting in early October. You will gain a NCFE level 3 radio diploma, in partnership with Bicton College.
For those not ready for the diploma, we also offer radio courses at levels 1 and 2, and an events management course which runs alongside them.
