Pop-Up Studio at Torre Abbey
Smooth Space artist Kate Paxman's Pop-up Studio will be at Torre Abbey on Monday 4 August, Monday 11 August and Monday 18 August.
Kate embarked on a year-long residency at Torre Abbey in June and is now sharing the outcomes of her work so far.
Kate's residency began as Torre Abbey engaged in the process of installing The Knight - a 15th century effigy smashed and broken during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. In 1988, fragments of the effigy were found in the Abbey's grounds during major archaeological excavations by the Museum of London, which then kept them in storage for nearly 30 years.
The Knight is now back in Torre Abbey, his effigy painstakingly recreated, and is on show for the first time in 470 years. Staff at the Abbey have linked the knight to the late 12th-century founder of Torre Abbey, William Brewer.
Kate will set up an impromtu studio in the Abbey's Medieval Undercroft from 10am to 5pm for these Monday working days, creating short films and animations showing how The Knight was reformed. Access to the Undercroft is free and you can drop in any time to watch her progress.
This residency is part of an ambitious partnership project between Torre Abbey and Smooth Space artists' initiative and will run until June 2015.
