'Mutability' a new exhibition for Torre Abbey Historic House
'Mutability' is from a new 2-part exhibition developed during the Smooth Space-Torre Abbey Residency project.
Artist Kate Paxman was in residence at Torre Abbey for 12 months from June 2014 to June 2015. Kate's period of research began just as Torre Abbey re-opened to the public following the second phase of an extensive Heritage Lottery funded restoration project. She became captivated by the building, viewing it as part of its extensive collections and her work reflects this fascination.
Built over 800 years ago, Torre Abbey is a historic house, museum, gallery and scheduled monument and carries its history in its reconfigured spaces - from the smashed and broken remnants of its Medieval church to disappeared corridors and hidden rooms. Mutability (a huge projected animation) and Beaten Earth (a temporary event of performed 'excavations' in the Medieval Cellarer's Undercroft) are reflections on defining the changing nature of the occupancy of Torquay's oldest building.
You can follow Kate's progress through the residency on her blog: www.torreabbeyresidency.blogspot.co.uk
The Smooth Space-Torre Abbey Residency Project has been supported by public funding from Arts Council England.
Smooth Space is an artist's initiative, led by a Kate Paxman and David Harbott, established in 2011 to realize significant contemporary art projects in public places across the UK. Often working in partnership with non-arts organizations, Smooth Space aims to take contemporary visual art to the heart of communities.
