Sarah Lloyd-Winder Storyteller Sarah Lloyd-Winder Storyteller
I am a professional storyteller who seeks out tales from around the world to tell at a variety of venues and situations. I have told stories in theatres and libraries, in fields and tents, in beautiful rooms and amazing venues, but what is most important is the audience and the magic that is created when a story is told and the listener creates the pictures and the atmosphere. I tell stories from the Folktales of the woods and moors of Great Britain, to the beautiful Myths and Legends of the world. These are stories of beauty, horror, comedy and the way people act. These are stories for adults or stories for children, don't imagine that storytelling is only for the young, we all enjoy a good story.
I originally trained as a dancer which then led to devising children’s-based dance theatre shows. These toured festivals, arts centres schools and theatres, alongside projects with refugees, special needs adults and children. This developed into part time teaching in further education, as well as completing a PGCE and an MA. With the MA I came full circle back to performance as a storyteller. Storytelling works through an improvisatory style of performance. The story may be closely structured, but there is no reading or learning of words. The storyteller improvises the story, like a jazz musician, influenced by the space, the audience or another dynamism that enters the story.
I have recently completed an Arts Council Funded Project where I placed recorded stories, recorded by children, adults and myself, on signs with QR codes in the Town Centre. I am at present Artist in residence at St Albans Cathedral.
