Talk: Business as Usual - retail busines in Watford in WW1
Food shortages, panic buying, blackout curtains, powdered egg and ration cards. Was this the Second World War? No, it was actually the experience of retailers and their customers on the Watford home front during the First World War.
Helen George's presentation “Business as Usual? The First World War and Retail Businesses in Watford 1914 to 1920” will tell the story of how Watford’s shopkeepers played a crucial role in maintaining the morale, health and wellbeing of the town’s residents during these tumultuous years. There will be a comparison with the role they were to play in on the home front when world war broke out again 25 years later.
