Women Artists In Renaissance Italy

An online workshop for International Women's Day, to celebrate extraordinary but overlooked women in the history of art.

The works of Italian Renaissance male artists are widely renowned and revered, but what about the women? We know that Renaissance Italy was a gendered society and that several barriers stood in the way of women taking up an art practice, yet several women did successfully overcome obstacles and create art. The work of Artemisia Gentileschi is now rightly being re-evaluated and celebrated, but the mid-16th century writings of Giorgio Vasari, document a small collection of lesser-known women artists of preceding generations. This session aims to celebrate the work of several extraordinary women active in the wider Renaissance period in Italy, to consider their routes into making art, explore and contextualise their works and consider why their creations have long been overlooked.
