The value of studying arts at postgraduate level

From September 2011 artists, designers and media creatives will have the opportunity to study a range of new and dynamic Postgraduate programmes at Plymouth College of Art, the South West’s leading independent Art, Design and Media College.

Speaking to The Independent recently about the value of studying arts at postgraduate level, Karin Jordan MA Programme Leader at the College talked about the huge changes in the creative jobs market. She explained how this changing landscape brings challenges but also opportunities for those looking to enter the creative sector.

The article said that while postgraduate qualifications may not open new doors, it does open them wider. The extra time spent furthering their studies and using facilities at the institution also gives students a great opportunity to network.

Karin explains that students on the MA courses at Plymouth College of Art are encouraged to be enterprising and entrepreneurial. They also benefit from access to a rich postgraduate research culture, coupled with extensive links to the College’s partners and networks with regional, national and international arts organisations.

The MA Entrepreneurship for Creative Practice at Plymouth College of Art is about to recruit its third cohort of students this year, with the first graduates due in January 2012. At the end of the first year of this programme students undertake a live external project to experiment with their entrepreneurial ideas.

Those undertaking this programme may have an existing creative practice which they want to nurture, revitalise and transform or they may wish to explore a new direction. By embracing new models of enterprise and exploring diverse tools, approaches and strategies, they are able to develop their practice.

There are two new postgraduate programmes being introduced at Plymouth College of Art for September 2011: MA Critical Curatorial Practice and MA Creative Practice for Sustainability.

MA Critical Curatorial Practice is a strong project-led programme for artists and curators, enabling them to develop fresh curatorial processes, models, methods, approaches and strategies that explore and challenge the prevailing narratives and approaches to contemporary arts curation.

MA Creative Practice for Sustainability examines the cutting edge opportunities opened up by the sustainability agenda and how individuals can flourish and capitalise their expertise. It aims to develop student’s technological, ethical and practical tools and transform their methods and approaches to creating and making to exploit opportunities in the emerging eco- and socio- economies.

Plymouth College of Art has also recently announced a new Postgraduate Bursary Scheme which is open to all candidates applying to start one of these two-year part-time MA courses in September 2011. Those who successfully apply for the bursary will receive a fixed fee reduction of up to 50% off their tuition fees for the full duration of their studies.
