'Radial Searcher' at High Cross House
This exhibition is the last planned exhibition by The National Trust at High Cross House on The Dartington Hall Estate near Totnes. My Scupture 'Radial Searcher' is currently displayed in the garden outside the property.
‘Radial Searcher’ is my largest freestanding sculpture to date, measuring 3.5 metres in height. Its width can vary due to its kinetic nature, as when viewers approach, its arms open out and close back in again; the piece is motor powered, and is activated by the viewer using a movement sensor.
The sculpture is intended as a reflection of the relationship between nature and mankind; it’s shape references plants and flower heads opening up in blossom, but it’s structure purposely looks manufactured, referencing humankind’s attempts to mimic nature. It also aims to question whether this could be some sort of satellite communicator, a space age invention or an object from another world.
Please find time to visit whilst the opportunity is there. The house hosts a wealth of artistic talent including;
the Society of Wood Engravers, Bookbinders of Dartington, an artists' handmade book Arc-en-ciel: A rainbow in print and verse. Artists in residences currently are Sue Deakin, Suzy Waldron, Helen Billinghurst, Val Jones and Heather Williams. The oral history 'Living Memories' sonic experience, in partnership with Soundart Radio, is installed in the house until 29 December.
