Family Open Day

Family Open Day

Visitors can enjoy Pallant House Gallery’s world-class Collection of Modern British Art and some of the special temporary exhibitions for FREE at the Family Open Day on Saturday 19 January. Family friendly activities will also be taking place throughout the day in aid of the innovative Community Programme.

Taking place in the Studio throughout the day, there will be a creative family drop in activity inspired by the Collection and current temporary exhibitions. The activity is free; however, a small donation is appreciated. Also available on the day will be a free children’s gallery trail for use in the ‘Jean Dubuffet: Transitions’ and ‘Outside In: National’ exhibitions. There is no need to book for any of the activities taking place, but children participating in the drop in activity in the Studio must be accompanied by a parent/carer who is willing to create.

As well as the Gallery’s permanent Collections which include works by Peter Blake and Henry Moore, visitors will also be able to take a look at some of the temporary exhibitions for FREE including the critically acclaimed ‘Gwen John and Celia Paul: Painters in Parallel’ (until 27 January), in which works from two of Britain’s most distinctive and respected female artists are placed side by side for the first time. The exhibition includes key examples of paintings and drawings by both artists, offering a unique insight into the common experiences and themes which bridge almost eight decades of history.

Also available for free is the ground-breaking ‘Outside In: National’ (until 3 February), which showcases around 80 pieces selected from submissions to the Outside In: National competition. From substance misusers to self-taught visionaries, the exhibition provides a unique insight into the extraordinary breadth and vitality of work produced by individuals from outside the mainstream art world.

Other free exhibitions include ‘Pat Douthwaite: An Uncompromising Vision’ (until 3 February), which focuses on the prints and drawings of self-taught Scottish artist Pat Douthwaite, ‘Bouke de Vries: Bow Selector’ (until 30 June) and the newly-opened Studio exhibition ‘Roy Anderson: All is Mortal’ (until 27 January), while entry to Jean Dubuffet: Transitions (until 3 February) will be half price.

Money raised through donations towards the creative drop in activity will go towards Pallant House Gallery’s innovative Community Programme which focuses on delivering projects and programmes that enable a broad range of people to access the gallery by offering meaningful and long term engagement.
