Blues & Roots Workshop
workshop three - 'blues and roots workshop' - autumn 2008
our autumn/winter' 08 theme follows on from our previous 'afro-american workshop'.
the genre we will find ourselves in will be that exciting period in the early 1960's where a new music was emerging from a melding of gospel, blues, jazz and soul.
still the music will be highly rhythmic and the performers will have to have a 'feel' for it as much as 'read the dots'; in fact you will meet only some sight reading, much improvising and enough musical decision making to make you feel that you have had a real work-out! as ever, we want you to develop as a musician by having fun playing your instrument so this is one course that won't be using 'talk and chalk!
as a follow-on program then, the structured activities will be just a bit more complex melodically, harmonically and rhythmically than the 'afro-american' activities, but as seasoned educators, we have carefully built-in 'differential standards' so there is something for everyone - relative beginner to seasoned pro!
note- we often find that the biggest obstacle to getting started on this 'workshop one' is not musical ability but confidence, if that sounds like you then talk it over with gary by email on gary@musicpeg.org.uk.
