Marsden Jazz Festival 2017
A nominee for this year’s Mercury Prize will be among the jazz artists heading to Marsden this October for the 26th Marsden Jazz Festival.
Dinosaur’s album ‘Together, As One’ has been nominated for The Hyundai Mercury Prize 2017, alongside artists including Ed Sheeran, Stormzy and The xx.
The group has recently performed at Ottawa Jazz Festival in Canada and the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival in the USA, and will be appearing in Marsden’s 19th century Mechanics Hall at 3pm on Saturday 7 October.
Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year Arun Ghosh will also be in Marsden for the first ever live performance of his new double album – The Blue Light and the Red Light – before heading off on UK tour.
And the festival’s organisers will be adding a brand new headline venue to this year’s event – the 1920s Parochial Hall next to St Bartholomew's Church.
The Friday night headliner at the Parochial Hall will be a special one-off gig by three titans of the trombone, made possible by the support of Honley-based Michael Rath Trombones.
The Bones of Rath will feature two-time Grammy award winner Michael Dease alongside jazz legends Mark Nightingale and Dennis Rollins.
The festival will also feature dozens of free gigs in Marsden’s pubs, clubs and cafes, a Saturday street parade, and an artisan market in the village’s Victorian park.
Artistic Director Barney Stevenson said:
“We’ve got a fantastic line-up of headline artists and free gigs at this year’s festival and I’d definite encourage anyone who hasn’t been before to come along for a weekend they won’t forget.
“We’re delighted that Dinosaur has been nominated for this year’s Mercury Prize and their gig in Marsden promises to be something really special.
“We’re also really pleased that Arun Ghosh has chosen to return to Marsden to launch his new album following his spellbinding sell-out gig at our 2015 festival.”
The Marsden Jazz Festival takes place between Friday 6 and Sunday 8 October 2017. More details on all this year’s gigs are available at www.marsdenjazzfestival.com.
