Moving Image Margate - 8th-13th March
Liz Sergeant's 'Speaking of Charlotte' has been selected for 'Moving Image Margate', an exhibition which brings together UK Women artists working in film, curated by Sally Childs. Works have been selected on the basis of their ability to challenge, provoke, amuse, educate and / or inspire. The exhibition is taking place at Margate House from 8th-13th March as part of the POW! Thanet festival to coincide with International Women's Day on 8th March.
'Speaking of Charlotte' is inspired by activist, suffragist and social reformer, Charlotte Despard (1844-1939), who began campaigning in her fifties and continued until her death aged 95, despite being imprisoned in Holloway twice in her sixties. Her inspiring and optimistic message - that age doesn't matter, that it's never too late to make a difference - is delivered in Trafalgar Square, the historical site of numerous political rallies and from where Charlotte delivered many of her compelling speeches. The work is essentially a eulogy, praising Charlotte’s courage, integrity and passion as she campaigned for the disadvantaged and vulnerable throughout her long life.
