David Young Exhibition
David Young started painting in oils during his late ‘teens and has gone on to become one of the West Country’s most notable landscape painters.
David William Young has gained a widely admired reputation over his career for his meticulously detailed and atmospheric oil paintings. His work covers a wide range of subjects, though in the publics view he will always be thought of as a Devon landscape artist known for his Dartmoor paintings.
His work is noted for a deep understanding and feeling for the effects of light, colours and textures that make up the Devon landscape he loves so much.
Although he is usually thought of as a Dartmoor artist (which he travels extensively on his grey gelding Thomas), he considers woodland his true spiritual home.
He does not paint many works in a year. Each painting takes months and is agonised over. Critical to each is the light, texture and presence.
He has declined commissions for some years so that he can devote himself to paintings that excite and extend the imagination.
He continues to live and work in the hamlet, his studio surrounded by his vegetables, compost heaps and abundant wildlife which are continual satisfying distractions.
