A Night at the Opera

A local opera company will be performing a programme of opera favourites in Teignmouth on Saturday 17th October. Red Earth Opera, with guest soloists Laura Curry, Iryna Ilnytska and Anando Mukerjee, will be singing well-known arias and choruses by Bizet, Puccini, Saint-Saens, Verdi, Massenet, Purcell and Delibes.

Red Earth Opera provides opportunities for local singers and musicians to sing and play opera in Devon. The performers are drawn from Devon, Somerset and Cornwall and range in age from under 18 up to past retirement.

The company was established in 2013 to perform at the 2014 Teignmouth Classical Music Festival. That performance of Dido and Aeneas was so successful that the company was invited back to perform Idomeneo in 2015 and it will present Gluck’s opera Iphegenia in Tauris during the 2016 festival.

Musical Director Jane Anderson-Brown says of Red Earth Opera: “Our aim is to present affordable opera which is complementary to that offered by the large touring companies or the corporate opera pops, and which is approachable and enjoyable for those who are not already keen on opera. We also want to give performers opportunities at all levels.”
