Creative Carving
2014 kicks off in style at Horsham District Council's Horsham Museum & Art Gallery with a showcase exhibition of wood and stone sculptures created by adult education students at Aspire Sussex. Under the tutelage of respected artist and craftswoman Claire Morris, students have had the opportunity to develop their talents; some have been coming to the classes for a number of years, others are relative newcomers to the craft.
All students were given advice and guidance in carving tools and techniques and were encouraged to select their own designs. Beginners worked alongside experienced learners and the classes themselves provided a place where people could share their skills and interests in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
Some of the works on show were inspired by classical designs, such as the griffin and Green Man sculptures, others by the eye-catching properties and grain of the materials themselves, such as the carving of the Virgin Mary and the Hunting Owl.
Tutor Claire Morris says: “As a professional sculptor myself, and course tutor with over 20 years experience teaching adults, I am delighted to have the opportunity to celebrate and praise the effort and creativity that goes into making the pieces on display.”
