Holly Carr

Holly Carr Fashion Designer Maker, Textile Practitioner and Educator

Independent designer-maker and textile practitioner Holly Carr is the founder of Huddersfield-based slow fashion label - pocket. The label was founded on her return from living overseas in New Zealand, where she attained a Bachelor of Design in Fashion Design and Technology from the Ara Institute of Canterbury.

Holly creates clothing, accessories and homewares from repurposed materials - to give a new lease of life to existing materials. Believing our clothes should be cherished for a lifetime not loved momentarily, she uses second-hand materials such as bedding, curtains, blankets and quilts and reimagines them as pieces to wear and use in a new way. Holly is passionate about keeping the art of making clothes alive and championing the skill involved in the process. Everything she creates is designed, drafted, cut and sewn in-house at the pocket studio in a textiles mill in the heart of Huddersfield.

Holly is also a founder and workshop facilitator for Thread Republic - a Kirklees based social enterprise connecting the local community to educational activities around sustainable clothing and textile practices in the form of creative workshops, talks and events. Holly teaches beginners sewing, basic machine skills, clothing repair and upcycling.

Holly works on a freelance basis as an educator and can turn her hand to many craft-related disciplines, working with people of all ages and abilities.
