A Sense of Place, A Slice of History
HERTFORD EXHIBITION CELEBRATES NEW TOURIST INFORMATION OFFICE
To mark Hertford Town & Tourist Information Centre’s move to new premises on The Wash opposite Hertford Theatre, local artist Hillary Taylor has been invited to exhibit her townscape drawings at the new location. With Hertford and Bengeo drawings taking pride of place in the Information Office window, the exhibition continues inside to international and abstract cities from London to Sydney and more. A Sense of Place, a Slice of History are title and original theme for the collection that examines history and life through buildings and other objects that form part of an architectural landscape.
Hillary Taylor researches places, architecture and history from a range or perspectives before constructing her composite drawings. For smaller townscapes, common themes illustrate one thread of the historic community fabric: a church, a pub and then buildings or objects that further illustrate the life of that place. Despite similarities in selection and layout, each completed drawing tells a different historical and visual story, marking social, architectural or other events and changes. International cities include tallest buildings, oldest/newest and new housing, and similarly buildings or features that draw a particular or sometimes personal story of that city or country. Each drawing has a strong foundation in research, each drawing collects a number of stories yet leaves the door open for so many more.
An engineering background gave Hillary a life often bounded by processes and calculations. She says “All around me I see everyday items and views that can be simplified, abstracted, built or viewed ‘differently’. Sometimes the end result is a fleeting image that can’t be captured, sometimes the end result ‘just is’. Each final image or object to me is just one of many possibilities, somehow frozen in time. In particular, my Hertford and Bengeo drawings in part represent a personal journey with Hertford, having lived in the town for secondary school and now living nearby. I’m confident there will be further Hertford drawings as I explore more of the past, present and future. ”
When asked about A Sense of Place, Hillary also gave this explanation. “Hertford TIC is a place to celebrate and learn about the town today as well as it’s many threads of history, and I’m delighted to have been asked to be part of this new exhibition and new products. The town itself is a vibrant centre that has seen many changes through the ages. While no single image can capture an entire story, I hope that my drawings offer a starting point for conversation, for explorations, for celebrations of the past and embracing a future. It’s been a delight working with the TIC and I look forward to the new memorabilia products later in the year.”
Drawings are available as framed or unframed signed limited edition fine art prints, as well as blank greetings cards.
