National Centre for Craft & Design Eco Photographer
These images are part of the final shortlist of ten photographs for the recent Eco Photography competition and exhibition at the Hub National Centre for Craft and Design.
These photographs are the result of a recent collaboration with the Head Gardener Ali Marshall in the Palm Houses at Torre Abbey in Devon. Ali Marshall's relationship with the plants in her custody is both scientific and highly Romantic. I wanted to record the emotive feelings Ali felt when uprooting an extraordinary two year old mother banana plant that had finished flowering. It looked like something out of a Science fiction movie and was highly photogenic. I dressed Ali in androgynous black robes , reminscent of Victorian mourning dress , also suggestive of monks robes in order to echo the historic context of the abbey and to generate a reverential atmosphere.
