Workshops Work!
Talk and Demonstration with Pastels Tutor, Keith Stott: Thursday 26 November at 12 noon
An exhibition of pastel paintings by 20 or more students who work regularly with Keith Stott in the studio at Harbour House. The students come to the class from all walks of life and with varying levels of experience, keen to experiment with this versatile medium and explore its possibilities.
As an artist and tutor, Keith recognises that most of us have a desire, deep within and often not fully recognised, to attempt to portray the world around us, and he understands the frustration that so often accompanies our initial attempts. He firmly believes in the value of learning skills in a workshop, so that the basic techniques become second nature and a more personal voice can develop through the work.
Artists paint primarily for themselves, to give pictorial expression to their emotional responses to an inspiration, the play of light, a juxtaposition of colours or shapes...
There are many problems to be solved, and painting may in a sense be seen as an endless exercise in problem solving.
The exhibition represents a pause on a journey of creative discovery for these students, and is intended to show a little of what can be achieved by a relatively small group of committed students - and to encourage those who hesitate to take the first creative steps. Indeed, Keith hopes that this body of work will encourage would-be artists to take the plunge, not necessarily in pastel painting, but in any art kind of art or craft workshop.
Keith holds firmly to the view that workshops really do work!
