Workshops Work!
Following a highly successful exhibition of students' work in 2009, Keith Stott presents a new body of pastel paintings produced by students at his popular Sunday workshops at Harbour House.
Keen to experiment with this versatile medium and explore its possibilities, the students come to the class from all walks of life and with varying levels of experience, and the 2009 exhibition attracted many new students to the group.
Keith himself is an accomplished painter, and has won the Derwent Prize at the Patchings International Competition.
As an artist and tutor, Keith recognises that most of us have a desire, deep within and often not fully recognised, to attempt to portray the world around us, and he understands the frustration that so often accompanies our initial attempts. He firmly believes in the value of learning skills in a workshop, so that the basic techniques become second nature and a more personal voice can develop through the work.
The exhibition represents a pause on a journey of creative discovery for these students, and is intended to show a little of what can be achieved by a group of committed students. Keith's intention is to encourage those who hesitate to take the first creative steps, and hopes that this body of work will encourage would-be artists to take the plunge, not necessarily in pastel painting, but in any kind of art or craft workshop.
Keith holds firmly to the view that workshops really do work!
Demonstration of pastel painting tehniques with Keith Stott: Thursday 24 March at 12 noon. Admission free.
