No need to book - just turn up!
Janette Jagger was born in the Australian desert and started painting at an early age, without encouragement from anyone. She just knew she wanted to paint, and has spent most of her life doing so. The hot, dry landscape and the cloudless blue skies and vast empty spaces of the outback left a lasting impression on her.
Nothing could be more different from the South Hams, where Janette enjoys painting summer scenes: crowded beaches with families enjoying themselves, making sand castles, surfing, cooking sausages, playing cricket... or the summer festivals, Frogmore Regatta, the local dog show, church fetes - all good subject matter for her naïve style of painting.
She has been accepted by the Association of British Naïve Artists and will exhibit in St. Ives in October 2014.
Janette has travelled widely, painting everywhere she goes: Brazil, Spain, France, Uganda, the Pacific Islands and many areas of Great Britain. She has made several trips to Uganda, were she has friends who work in orphanages and are involved with the very poor and needy. She says, ‘A little help can make such a difference to a child and give them a good start in life. It's very rewarding, and the children are so grateful and full of joy. Uganda has a special place in my heart… and it's wonderful to paint.’
In 2015 Janette and a friend, currently working in Uganda, plan a 6 month painting trip around Australia, seeing as much as possible. When Janette is back in the empty landscapes and spectacular colours of Australia she finds her paintings become more impressionistic and less naïve in style.
‘Every place, every country and every area has its own personality and makes painting exciting.’
