The 21 Group of Artists
The 21 Group was formed in 1967, when the late Jane Prout approached 21 forward-looking local painters and persuaded them to exhibit together. Forty two years on, it is now the longest established exhibiting group in the South West.
Since its early days, the 21 Group has gone from strength to strength, exhibiting at least once, sometimes three times, a year. It continues to restrict the membership to a maximum of twenty one in order to maintain high standards. Although centred in Totnes, members live over a wide area stretching from beyond Exeter in the east, to Cornwall in the west, and northwards to Tavistock.
A sense of commitment combined with individual creativity are the basic requirements for membership. While the dominating subject of the exhibitions is usually landscape, the very different approaches, techniques and wide range of media, interact creatively with each other.
Artists exhibiting at Harbour House are Colin Bigwood, Nick Collier, Jean Coombe, Sally Cottis, John Dodson, Sophie Gurney, Mary Gillett, Anne Hinkins, Alexandra Jacobs, Moira Mellor, Wendy McBride, Wendy Newman, Jenny Pery, Penny Robinson, Rita Smith, Madeleine Strobel, Stephen Taylor, Clody Wain and Vincent Wilson.
