Under the Surface
Bev Carson studies nature, seeking out the striking form and vivid colours of flowers, and intrigued by the mystery of what lies beneath the surface. Her background in textiles and printmaking shows in the textural quality of her paintings and, influenced by the rich textures and colours favoured by Gustav Klimt, she enjoys experimenting with gold leaf, textile paints and gouache. The movement and energy of Van Gogh's paintings also play a part in the development of her works, along with the striking format of Georgia O'Keefe's large flower paintings.
Following a degree in Integrated Arts in 1984 Bev pursued a career in teaching art to disadvantaged young people in South London. As Artist in Residence she opened the Clapham Community Arts Project in 1986, where she taught art classes to adults and young people. She also exhibited her own work with the South London Women's Co-operative in small galleries across South London and in Highgate, and some of her works were also included in a travelling exhibition in prisons and mental health institutions across Britain. In Surrey in the 1990s Bev continued to work on community arts projects as well as holding exhibitions of her work, before moving to Devon in 2007.
