Primary Colours
The Harbour House gallery year traditionally starts with Primary Colours, and this colourful exhibition of Primary Schools' art work remains a firm favourite.
Twelve local schools have been invited to contribute drawings, paintings, collage, printmaking and sculpture to this exhibition, offering inspiration to artists of all ages and brightening up the gloomy days of winter.
Open Mon - Sat, 10 am - 5 pm
Picasso recognised the freshness and vitality of children's art work when he said:
'Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up',
and amongst the community of local artists in the South Hams, many insist that Primary Colours is the highlight of the gallery year.
A special feature of this year's Primary Colours exhibition will be 'Spirit of the Olympics' - a project involving all of the local schools and resulting in a stunning display of metre-square canvases, brought together at Harbour House for the first time. Sadie Medway, local art teacher, and Director of Arts Speak, was asked to lead the project, spending two days in each school and encouraging a collaborative response from pupils across Key Stages 1 & 2. The children were encouraged to explore social and emotional themes associated with the London 2012 Olympics, with particular emphasis on the Oympic values of teamwork, respect, friendship, excellence, cultural diversity, mutual understanding, peace, taking part, and giving your best. The project has been inspired by vibrant 20th Century London Underground posters, and pupils have explored ways to communicate their ideas and understanding of Olympic values in clear and creative ways.
Harbour House is grateful to Kingsbridge Town Council for its contribution to the cost of staging this important exhibition.
