Island Artist
"I love big stormy seas, wild winds and the raw coastline of the south west.
I like islands too, especially Burgh Island. I like empty beaches where I can swim on hot sunny English days, and big wide skies that offer up a myriad of colours. I dream, I think, I paint. I paint what I love. There is nothing more or less than that. Every brush stroke I make reminds me of the feeling of these things, these elements of life, and I try to translate that free spirited essence that I think we all crave from time to time. The sea, the weather and the land we stand upon are great levellers and teachers, as great as the masters I have studied in my art training, but when it comes down to it, I am an artist who simply loves to paint."
Emma's paintings explore her relationship with the sea and the coast, in what she considers a natural development of the creativity and imagination that thrive in the wild, natural places of her childhood. Typically she throws a handful of sand into the paint as she applies it to her canvas. Her recent works move into more abstract territory.
It has been a busy few years for Emma, who is proactive on the local and regional circuit, helping to provide a platform for emerging and established artists through the events such as the Great Create Festival of Arts, English Eccentrics, and TACO at Torre Abbey in Torquay. She is currently Art Programme Manager for the National Trust at High Cross House in Dartington.
