Interpretations 3
Maggie Smith, Sam Gingell and Sarah Harcus present their third group exhibition at Harbour House, making personal interpretations of the local landscape in painting, printmaking, pastels and mixed media, and each of the artists has made a response to Slapton Ley Nature Reserve for this collection.
Gallery Talk with Sarah Harcus and Maggie Smith: Saturday 18 August at 12 noon.
Sarah Harcus works mainly in pastels, responding directly to the timeless rhythms of the surrounding countryside and coastline.
"Trees are a particular magnet for me, especially those which are bent by the prevailing winds."
Blackdown Rings offers endless possibilities for studies of trees in the landscape.
Sarah has exhibited at The Mall Gallery in London and across Europe, before settling in the South Hams.
Sam Gingell makes a more personal interpretation of the landscape, with semi-abstract acrylic and oil paintings with a dream-like atmosphere.
"I find the beauty of Devon's skies, seas, patchwork fields and winding hedgerows, and how the light changes with the weather and the seasons, awe-inspiring. The landscape makes me feel calm, restored and positive. I'm preoccupied with the horizon in the landscape and my paintings explore what happens when sky and land or sky and sea meet, where light touches dark, and the energy it creates."
Sam has painted and exhibited with the Foxhole Painters at Dartington and at Birdwood House in Totnes.
Maggie Smith uses printmaking, painting and mixed media techniques to respond to landscape, seascape and the natural world. Her works range from large mixed media seascapes to tiny, intricate drypoints recording the hens in her vegetable garden.
The forms and patterns of the Botswana landscape have also been a strong influence in Maggie's recent work.
Some of her work is now available printed onto teatowels and fine china mugs.
Maggie holds regular Open Studio events in Goveton, and her work can be seen at a range of galleries in Devon and Dorset.
