Seeing Double
An exhibition of drawing, painting and printmaking.
The representation of the human body has always been a central preoccupation for artists, a theme which continues here with the discipline of observation in the life class, which is Sue’s primary focus, and the figure incorporated in the lived world, which is Steve’s point of departure.
The exhibition represents an opportunity for the artists to review and reflect on their recent work and to identify further avenues of exploration.
Sue Steele’s work is involved with the dynamism of the human form interacting within the confines of the frame or picture edge. Strong diagonals are apparent in nearly all of the work with canvases produced either directly in the life class or later developed from drawings in the studio. The quality of line is a major consideration for Sue as she combines ink, wax, graphite and acrylic in an immediate and expressive response to the figure. Colour is restrained so that the form can be revealed through mark making.
Steve Kenna shares Sue’s preoccupation with the human form as the central focus or motif in his work, whether in single-figure studies, grouped figure settings or incidental character compositions as part of a larger scale narrative.
The quality of line is a vital component. Steve works with a predominantly layering technique with transparent oil and acrylic glazes over original charcoal or pencil compositions which are lost, discarded then powerfully redefined to create the restless, powerful dynamic system of mark-making which has been a trademark of his work to date.
Both Sue and Steve have recently exhibited at Harbour House and the Loft Studio in Salcombe.
