Forgotten Faces - Recent Works by Paul Hannon

An exhibition of images predominantly reflecting the intensity and solemnity of war.

Recent works in carbon dry stick on plaster intensify the harshness and barrenness of conflict, and share some of the sombre feel of black and white newsreel footage.

The images, produced over a period of five years, form part of a larger body of Paul's work which primarily explores the physical and spiritual nature of human existence. He is intrigued by the circumstances, encounters and opportunities that effect and shape a journey though life and, rather than offering a lifelike interpretation of a chosen narrative, he hopes is to evoke an emotional response from the viewer. Despite their apparent simplicity and restricted palette, Paul's paintings and drawings can carry a dreamlike and occasionally nightmarish quality, drawing the viewer into a journey that can be ambiguous, meditative or challenging.

"What on earth am I doing here?" is an entry in his father's note book, detailing some of his encounters during his captivity and imprisonment during World War II. Paul often returns to these few words, pondering on his own teenage years spent in relative comfort and security, and trying to picture himself confronted with such fears and ordeals.
